What Causes Hives?
Patients sometimes wonder what hives are and why they occur. Also known as urticaria, hives affect about 1/5 of all individuals at some point in their lifetime. Hives typically manifest as a patch of itchy skin which later develops itchy, swollen, red welts.
Hives can be caused by a wide range of situations and substances. Some common triggers for hives include pollen, pet dander, latex, some foods, insect bites and stings, and plants like poison ivy and poison oak. Some other possible causes include blood transfusions, medications, infections, and physical stimuli like heat, cold, sun exposure, pressure, and exercise. To prevent hives, avoid your triggers and visit an allergist for treatment.
