• USA Today: Treatment Reduces Kids’ Peanut Allergy Risk up to 86%

A recent publication about peanut allergy called the LEAP study has recently been featured in all major news networks.

The study provides evidence that the early introduction of peanuts, before the age of 11 months, offers protection from the development of peanut allergies.

The physicians of A&AS are aware of the study and, since 2010, have encouraged the early introduction of solid foods given previous evidence confirmed by the LEAP study.

The physicians of A&AS are dedicated to being at the forefront of developments in the field of Allergy and Immunology and would be happy to discuss this further at your next scheduled office visit.

  • Desensitizing Children for Peanut Allergies

Does your child suffer from a peanut allergy? If so, you might want to talk to your child’s allergy doctor about desensitizing your child to help her avoid some of the risk of having a food allergy.

    What is Food Sublingual Immunotherapy?

Food Sublingual Immunotherapy, also known as SLIT, is a treatment plan designed to help patients suffering from various food allergies. This treatment can reduce the severity of allergic reactions upon consumption, making it especially beneficial for children who many not understand just how much their allergy affects them. SLIT treatment starts by placing a very small dosage of the food that causes the allergic reaction under the child’s tongue and keeping it there for two minutes.

    Does SLIT Cure Food Allergies?

SLIT treatment does not cure allergies to foods such as peanuts. Since food allergies can be very severe in many patients, the risk of accidentally consuming even a small piece of the food they are allergic to can be a very scary thought. SLIT treatment can reduce a person’s reactivity to the food they are allergic to, making them less likely to suffer from an anaphylactic reaction if they accidentally consume the food.

How Long Does the Process Take?

When starting the SLIT treatment, patients take their first dosage in their allergy doctor’s office. They also stay there for a couple of hours for observation. After this, the patient takes the same dosage at home every day for two weeks. The process then starts over, but with a dosage increase. Most patients complete treatment in six to eight months. • A Brief Overview of Hives

    854190

Have you ever broken out in hives? These obnoxious red bumps sometimes seem to magically appear on the skin. Sometimes hives pop up due to an allergic reaction, but the cause of hives is not always known. This can make it difficult to figure out what causes hives and when they are most likely to appear.

Hives caused by an allergic reaction typically appear when a person touches or ingests an item that produces a histamine in the blood vessels. This causes blood plasma to leak from the blood vessels, resulting in red bumps on different areas of skin. Hives can itch or can feel like they are burning or stinging. If you notice hives, it is a good idea to contact an allergy doctor.
